Thebacha Leadership Council
The Thebacha Leadership Council (TLC) formed through the collaborative Community Leadership Initiative (CLI) process facilitated by the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER).
The CLI is a facilitated process that provides Indigenous and municipal elected leaders with support, resources, and expertise as they find solutions to shared challenges, address common concerns, and develop a shared path forward.
TLC / CLI in Fort Smith aimed to build a “Leaders Table” between four levels of government and their administrations. This table will seek to advance the development of the region.
On June 21st, 2024, a historic Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed by the governments of Salt River First Nation, Smith’s Landing First Nation, Fort Smith Métis Council, and the Town of Fort Smith, as well as the Members of the Legislative Assembly for Thebacha.
The MOA highlights the leaders’ shared priorities, including taking care of shared lands and waters, celebrating and preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing the social and economic well-being of the Fort Smith community.
The signing of the MOA is the beginning of a commitment to work together and to develop a long-term framework for action on shared priorities for the benefit of all.
